Artist Statement

Mastery of craft is one of my life goals as a painter rooted in the traditional method. I work from life as much as possible as it the most authentic experience I can have with the visual world around me, allowing me the time to imagine the mystery behind things. I love to rely on an intuitive sense of design as I start a painting, working out the abstractions of shape, value and color directly on the canvas; these are the building blocks that create the visual dynamism of a work, I explore with these while at same time employing them to create structure and form. I am drawn to personalities that exude character and empathize with them as I endeavor to tell their stories with a sense of imagination, metaphor and sometimes humor. These stories are implied and not fully explained, leaving it up to the viewer to fill in the gaps of the story, in which I hope to create some degree of mystery and wonder.
