“I am drawn to personalities that exude character and empathize with them as I endeavor to tell their stories with a sense of imagination, metaphor and sometimes humor.”
Kerry Dunn, Painter
Kerry Dunn graduated in 1999 from Ringling School of Art and Design with a major in illustration. After graduation Mr. Dunn moved to New York City to attend the famed Art Students League of NY and study with internationally-renowned portrait painter Nelson Shanks. Later that year, he was invited by Mr. Shanks to move to Philadelphia to be a part of the new painting school Studio Incamminati. Since its beginning in 2002, Studio Incamminati has grown to become a Philadelphia institution, renowned for its focus on traditional painting methods taught within the master/student environment. Mr. Dunn currently currently lives and works in Philadelphia and teaches at Studio Incamminati as part of the core faculty.
Kerry Dunn’s work has been highlighted in numerous publications including American Art Collector and American Artist, and his work has won “Best of Show” in both the Portrait Society of American International Portrait Competition and the Bennington Center of the Arts Laumeister Fine Art Competition.
Artist Statement
Mastery of craft is one of my life goals as a painter rooted in the traditional method. I work from life as much as possible as it the most authentic experience I can have with the visual world around me, allowing me the time to imagine the mystery behind things. I love to rely on an intuitive sense of design as I start a painting, working out the abstractions of shape, value and color directly on the canvas; these are the building blocks that create the visual dynamism of a work, I explore with these while at same time employing them to create structure and form. I am drawn to personalities that exude character and empathize with them as I endeavor to tell their stories with a sense of imagination, metaphor and sometimes humor. These stories are implied and not fully explained, leaving it up to the viewer to fill in the gaps of the story, in which I hope to create some degree of mystery and wonder.

Something about this piece reminded me of The Brandywine Tradition and the early Wyeth clan.
